Mortal Kombat 11

NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 11 looks really, really good. However, contrary to popular belief, it’s not developed with Unreal Engine 4 like, say, Tekken 7 or Street Fighter 5. Instead, the fighting game has been put together using NetherRealm’s custom version of Unreal Engine 3.

Addressing the game’s engine on Twitter, NetherRealm programming lead Jon Greenberg clarified that that is the actual engine used. “To whoever keeps changing the Mortal Kombat 11 Wikipedia page to claim the game uses UE4…While I appreciate the intention and while we take this as a compliment, MK11 is built on NRS’s custom UE3 version. And yes, our version of UE3 is radically different from Epic’s at this point.”

One user noted that the confusion arose when the Unreal Engine 4 Blueprints editor could be seen on-screen in a recent behind-the-scenes trailer. As it turns out, this was for the mobile version of the game. Greenberg stated that, “Mobile is using UE4, and footage got mixed in. We’re all in the same building, and in some cases, some folks end up working on both.”

Mortal Kombat 11 is currently in development for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It’s scheduled to launch on April 23rd, though an online stress test will be held later this month. Meanwhile, head here to check out the recent story trailer, which talks about exactly what’s going on in the upcoming sequel following all the insane developments of the previous game.
