Two of Capcom’s most recent major releases in Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 5 – both of which seem to be doing very well for themselves – have been stunning technical achievements, which they have both been able to accomplish thanks to their usage of the incredible RE Engine, which Capcom debuted with Resident Evil 7. The fidelity of the engine hasn’t gone unnoticed, and it seems Capcom plans on utilizing the toolset to the fullest.

Speaking in a Q&A session with investors during their latest quarterly financial briefing, Capcom confirmed that they plan on using the RE Engine to propel development for their games on next generation consoles, seeing as they built the engine with “augmentation for next-generation development in mind”.

“The games we developed using the RE ENGINE during this current hardware generation have received critical acclaim, and from the early stages of building this engine, we kept the ability to augment it for next-generation development in mind,” Capcom said when asked about their strengths going forward into the next generation of console hardware. “As such, we view the RE ENGINE as one of our strengths that will contribute to next-generation game creation.”

Later, when asked about the titles they currently have in development using the engine, Capcom didn’t give a specific answer, but confirmed that they do have several such projects in the pipeline.

“While we are unable to comment on the specific number of titles or release windows, there are numerous titles currently being developed internally with the RE ENGINE,” said Capcom.

What those games might be is anyone’s best guess at this point. It goes without saying that a new Resident Evil game has to be one such title- whether that’s Resident Evil 3 Remake or Resident Evil 8 remains to be seen. It’s also worth noting that Hideaki Itsuno, director of Devil May Cry 5, recently moved on to a new project (which might be Dragon’s Dogma 2)- perhaps that could be using the RE Engine as well? Though how adept the engine is at building open world titles (assuming he is working on a Dragon’s Dogma sequel) is a bit of question mark.

Either way, it’ll probably be a while yet before we find out, so don’t hold your breath.
