Wolfenstein: Youngblood Dev Says Server-Based Streaming Services Like Stadia Can Make Split-Screen More Viable

But don't expect for it to happen in Youngblood's Stadia release.

MachineGames are trying something new with their upcoming Wolfenstein: Youngblood, adopting a more co-op centric approach to their game as opposed to the exclusive single player affairs that their games have been in the past- which is something that, as per themselves, signifies a great push for multiplayer on their part going forward.

But even though Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a game that puts a great deal of focus on co-op gameplay (though you can still play all of it solo if you want), it doesn’t support split-screen. That, sadly, has become increasingly common in modern games, owing to the fact that split-screen co-op is something that can have major hits on performance. This has led to splitscreen games becoming increasingly rare.

However, as per MachineGames co-founder and Wolfenstein: Youngblood executive producer Jerk Gustafsson, server-based streaming services like Stadia – which will have Youngblood as a launch title – can make it easier for developers to implement split-screen co-op in their games.

“I hadn’t really thought of that, actually. It could be, if it’s server-based,” said Gustafsson while speaking with GamesBeat, when asked if Stadia would make it easier to do split-screen co-op easier going forward. “It would take a lot of technical work to set that up either way. But we are doing a Stadia version of the game for later this year. On a personal note, I’m super excited about what the streaming services can bring to gaming in the future. We can see some cool things coming. Hopefully we can do interesting things like what you’re talking about for future games.”

Though Wolfenstein: Youngblood will be launching with Stadia when the service releases in November, it still won’t have split-screen co-op- but it’s interesting to hear that server-based streaming could make split-screen more viable in the future, potentially.

Other than Stadia, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is launching for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch- in just three days, on July 26.
