Death Stranding’s Trailers Haven’t Been Trying To Mislead You About Its Story, As Per Kojima

"I haven’t lied at all – I just create the story as-is," says Kojima.

In recent weeks, the perpetual fog of mystery surrounding Death Stranding has lifted to some extent, with its huge gameplay blowout and another trailer that sets up its central narrative impetus quite well. But this is a Hideo Kojima game after all, and there are many who feel that Kojima is still playing things close to his chest, and that there are crucial components that we don’t know about yet.

This, after all, is a man who led us to believe that Solid Snake would be the main playable character in Metal Gear Solid 2, a man who hid his face with bandages and announced Metal Gear Solid 5 as a new IP by a new studio on a live stage- and though we’re probably at a point where something as radical likely won’t happen with Death Stranding, many feel the game’s trailers so far have still been deliberately designed to hide the game’s true nature.

According to Kojima, however, that isn’t the case. Speaking with Game Informer, Kojima said that his trailers haven’t been misleading people, and that once players have played the game from start to finish, all its storylines will connect and make sense.

“I haven’t lied at all – I just create the story as-is,” said Kojima. “In the trailers, maybe I just put out the scenes in between. But if you play from the start to the end, you will understand because it’s all connected. All the side plots are kind of recovered, all the small stories and things like that.”

Kojima recently also spoke about trying to establish a new genre with Death Stranding, and how it will take time to properly judge how people are reacting to it. He also feels he will need to make sequels if he wants to establish the genre properly.

Death Stranding is out on November 8 for the PS4.
