Sunset Overdrive – Sony Owns Rights to “Past Insomniac Games Works”

When asked about a port, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida says he's "looking forward to future titles."

Sunset Overdrive

When Sony announced its acquisition of Insomniac Games, it created quite the stir. After all, Insomniac had delivered a massive hit last year with Spider-Man, selling over 13 million copies as of July 28th 2019. However, the question inevitably arose: What about Sunset Overdrive?

The title was developed by Insomniac but published by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One. A sequel has long been wanting, but the latter hasn’t really budged on the same. With its acquisition of Insomniac, it seems that Sony now owns the rights to the franchise. Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s Worldwide Studios president for SIE, told Inside Games recently, “SIE holds the rights to past Insomniac Games works.”

When asked if he was worried about what would happen to the IP in the future, Yoshida simply replied, “Insomniac is a powerful developer, so I can only say that I am looking forward to future titles” before laughing. Which makes sense, considering the company is planning for the PlayStation 5 and already has established franchises like Ratchet and Clank that Insomniac could work on. The prospect of a Spider-Man sequel is also pretty enticing (check out our review of the game here).
