System Shock 3

The revival of the System Shock series is in development now in the form of System Shock 3. We’ve seen some early gameplay footage, which you can check out through here. While obviously the game will aim to modernize certain aspects from the past, one thing it won’t be doing is the class or specialist system that’s become more and more popular over the years.

In an interview with Gamespot, Series Creator Warren Spector said the game was aiming to implement augmentations for your character over classes or a specialist system, saying that he feels it goes more with the immersion aspect that made the series so beloved to begin with. He specifically compared it to Deus Ex and how you alter your character to fit your personal style.

“One of the hallmarks of the immersive sim is it’s about you in the world. You the player, not your little 64-pixel-tall avatar or whatever. It’s about you making the decisions that you feel are appropriate to the situation. So the most important thing to me is each player’s individual playstyle driving the experience. Having said that, we do have, just like we had an in Deus Ex and in other games, body augmentation and fighting modifications.”

System Shock 3 is currently in development with a PC version confirmed. Console versions will come at some point, but as of now none have been officially specified nor an official time frame for release.
