The Last Of Us Part 2 Aims To Run Well On Base PS4, Says Lead Game Designer

Those not on the Pro are being thought of.

the last of us part 2

As this generation slowly begins to wind down, several big releases have started running into the issue of performance. Part of that is just natural as the juice of these machines are now being taken to the limit, but it also comes from the midgen refresh hardware revisions (the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X), which have a little more power than the base models. While base model users still make up the majority of sales, a lot of newer titles are being optimized for the midgen versions, leaving base console versions with a lot of technical issues. Whether or not The Last of Us Part 2will have that issue is something we’ll have to wait and see on, but developer Naughty Dog has it in mind.

Speaking with US Gamer, Lead Game Designer Emilia Schatz said that the lead platform for the game was still the base PS4. They do plan to utilize the advantages of the Pro, but “Our target platform is the PS4, the base,” Emilia said. “That’s actually what I’ve got on my desk at work, and so that’s what we sort of aim for.”

The original game actually had a pretty wonky performance on the PS3 when it first released, and with the second one looking to really push those visuals I won’t be too surprised if the sequel ends up similarly no matter which of the two hardware options you play on. Either way, we’ll find out when The Last of Us Part 2 releases on PlayStation 4 early next year.
