PlayStation 5 Backwards Compatibility Still in Development

The development team is still working hard to ensure "100 percent backward compatibility".

Yesterday, Sony finally confirmed the PlayStation 5’s official name (which is, shocker, PlayStation 5) and a release window of Holiday 2020. We also learned more about the next DualShock controller and that Bluepoint Games (of Shadow of the Colossus remake fame) is working on a “big” title for the platform. However, it seems that one aspect of the console is still in development: Backwards compatibility.

Earlier this year, lead architect Mark Cerny noted that the PS5 would be backwards compatible with PS4 games. However, Sony recently told Famitsu (translation via DualShockers) that, “Our development team is currently hard at work in order to make 100 percent backward compatibility with PS4 possible. Please wait for further information.” This means that not every PS4 game will be playable on the PS5.

It’s not the strangest thing, especially when you consider how long it took to get backwards compatibility on the Xbox One for Xbox 360 and OG Xbox games. We still have a ways to go before the PS5’s official reveal, let-alone any announcement about its price or design. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
