Resident Evil 3’s Nemesis Is “Relentless,” Has More Advanced AI Than Mr. X

The iconic monster is out for blood more than ever.

Recently, we’ve heard a lot about what the upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake won’t have that the PS1 original. It seems the remake will drop the bonus Mercenaries Mode, and it won’t have the multiple endings or live selection choices either. But one thing it still will have? Nemesis, of course. One of the most iconic creatures from the survival horror series, he’s getting a bit of a makeover, and it seems he’s going to be more ruthless than ever.

Producer Peter Fabiano recently spoke with the UK Official PlayStation Magazine (issue 171, Feb 2020), and he talked about the improvements to the game’s big bad, who’s become one of the most beloved monsters of the franchise. He says the foe will have a more advanced AI than the Tyrant fans refer to as Mr. X, who stalked players for large sections of Resident Evil 2. While Fabiano didn’t explicitly say Nemesis will stalk Jill through the entire game, he did say that the encounters won’t always be the scripted instances like they were in the original game, and referred to him as “relentless,” which seems to imply he’ll be a pretty constant threat.

Resident Evil 3 has more open spaces and one of the things that makes Nemesis so frightening is that he is relentless and you never know where he might show up,” he said.

The continuous stalker angle is one that seems tailor-made for the original concept of Nemesis, but it can be a hard one to pull off, since it’s a mechanic that could easily become tedious. Either way, the mutant is going to be a tough one to deal with in the more open streets of Raccoon City when Resident Evil 3 hits stores later this year.
