Sony revealed tons of new information about the PS5 recently by way of lead system architect Mark Cerny. With all the talk of reduced install times for patches, next-gen 3D audio and so on, it’s also good to hear that the company is addressing fan noise. In the deep dive video, Cerny explained that the console will now use a fixed amount of power when playing games along with a “variable frequency.”

This allows for a cooling system that doesn’t go crazy because the amount of power being consumed remains the same. For those who have had concerns about the PS4’s fan noise throughout its life-cycle, this should come as a relief. We’ll have to see how it performs over time though, especially when more intense games come around.

The PS5 is currently slated to release in Holiday 2020. Sony has revealed the full technical specs for the hardware, reporting 10.28 TFLOPs of GPU performance on a custom RDNA 2 with 36 CUs running at 2.23 GHz. The CPU is a Zen 2 octa-core running at 3.5 GHz while the overall memory is  16GB GDDR6 with a bandwidth of 448 GB per second.
