When it comes to the next generation of consoles, of course the bulk of the conversation comes down to what will be new, and how things will progress. But there’s also wonder about the old as backwards compatibility can be a big thing for some people. Microsoft and Sony have taken two different path there, with Microsoft having a pretty wide net from various console generations, and Sony focusing on a more limited scope to just select PS4 titles. Only one game has been explicitly confirmed to be backwards compatible right now, and that’s Rainbow Six Siege.

In a Q&A on Ubisoft’s website, creative director Leroy Athanassoff confirmed that current versions of Siege would work on next generation consoles. While it had been confirmed the game would be coming to said systems before, this is the first time we’ve heard that you’ll be able to directly take those versions to your shiny new systems. It’s not too surprising on the Xbox side, considering the scope of Microsoft’s BC for Series X, but it’s still unclear how many PS4 titles the PS5 will function with. Along with that, Athanassoff also confirms there will be cross-gen matchmaking.

“The only thing we are communicating right now is the fact that we are supporting cross-generation matchmaking,” Athanassoff said. “For example, PS5 players can play with PS4 players, and Xbox Series X players can play with Xbox One players. The game will be backwards compatible, meaning that you can take your disc of Rainbow Six Siege on PS4 and put it in your PS5, or take your Xbox One disc and put it in your Xbox Series X.”

Rainbow Six Siege is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
