Final Fantasy 7 Remake Sales Pleased Square Enix; Plans Are Being Made To Capture More Players

Could we get something in between this and the next part?

There’s probably not a whole left to be said about Final Fantasy 7 Remake at this point. The game has been dissected, fawned over and just discussed to exhaustion by now. But it seems as if that could change, depending on how much you want to read into statements about the game’s sales, as well as hopes for the future.

In the latest financial briefings from Square Enix, CEO Yusuke Matsuda expressed being pleased with the game’s overall sales. This probably isn’t too surprising considering everything pointing to the game’s success. Matsuda said that while physical copies were down a bit, digital sales more than made up for that.

“We are pleased that we were able to top 3.5 million units given that we chose to produce and ship fewer physical disks due to the impact that we foresaw from the coronavirus outbreak. Disk sales were lower than we had initially anticipated, but growth in digital sales increased their percentage of the whole, which we expect to lead to a better gross margin.”

Nothing too shocking there, but Matsuda did go on to say something that might be a tad surprising. Many assumed we were done with FF7 Remake until the next part, whenever that may be. But Matsuda seems to imply they have ideas for capturing more players throughout the years beyond just price cuts.

“Capturing new players is key. I will refrain from going into the details, but we have plans for initiatives to capture players throughout the year, so please keep an eye on our progress. I also note that we will not engage in any marketing strategy that relies solely on pricing.”

Could some kind of DLC actually be coming in-between the first and second parts of Final Fantasy 7 Remake? It’s hard to imagine them putting up story content of any significant kind. We know that there is at least a year of exclusivity to the PS4, so it’s unlikely that Matsuda is referring to that. We’ll just have to wait and see what the company has in mind.
