One of the first next generation only game releases we got to look at was Godfall. Counterplay Games’ newest title has some slick fantasy style, and plans to have weapons, lots and lots of weapons. While loot-based systems have become all the rage, leading up to what many dub as the looter shooter, those systems have not been apply as much to action titles. But it seems Godfall wants to change that.

Director Keith Lee spoke with GameSpot about the game, and he said that he wants to basically create a new genre with Godfall‘s slasher-based loot system. He points to his team’s experience with working at Blizzard on Diablo as a good way to fuse these elements with tight, skill-based action gameplay. While Godfall won’t be the first game of this type to play with loot systems (DarkSiders 2, for instance, had some similar systems), it aims to fuse the two in a more fluid way for action game fans.

“The vision for making this game was how we can merge [looting with] third-person melee combat, getting really juicy, tight combat mechanics, the moment to moment flow, and that experience, because a lot of the people on our team love skill-based action combat titles,” Lee said. “Yet, also, there are people on our team, given our background having worked on Diablo and working at Blizzard, that we’ve always had a love for loot-driven action-RPGs. We love playing Borderlands. So really, the original premise and the concept was, can we have a game where it’s somewhere in the middle, meaning that it’s one part loot-driven, as well as one part skill-driven. It’s more like an intrinsic mastery of the combats while the loot is more of an extrinsic reward system for you to be motivated to play the game.”

Godfall is planned to launch for both PS5 and PC this holiday season. You can check out the latest gameplay footage of the game through here.
