Resident Evil 7 brought Capcom’s survival horror series back on track, and was widely well received by fans and critics alike thanks to its return to the franchise’s survival horror roots, but its sales right out the gate were much slower compared to the likes of Resident Evil 5 and 6. Capcom, however, have always maintained that they’re taking a long-term view of the game’s sales, and in that regard, view it as a success- it is a strategy that is paying dividends.

Capcom recently updated their list of Platinum sellers, and have confirmed that as of June 30, 2020, Resident Evil 7 has sold 7.9 million units worldwide. As of the end of 2019, its sales stood at 7 million. This makes it the highest selling single release in the franchise, outselling even Resident Evil 5 (7.7 million units) and Resident Evil 6 (7.6 million units). Meanwhile, Resident Evil 2’s remake has sold 7.2 million units, so it’s possible that that will soon overtake RE7.

It’s worth noting that if sales were re-releases and multiple SKUs for single games are taken into account, Resident Evil 7 still has a ways to go before outselling 5, 4, and 6, which have collectively sold 11.8 million, 10.2 million, and 9.8 million units respectively.

Meanwhile, the recent Resident Evil 3 has sold 2.7 million units since launch, and though it has suffered a drop in sales as far as pace is concerned, Capcom have said that it’s performing as per their expectations.

The next game in the series, Resident Evil Villagelaunches for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2021.
