The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are both out now globally, and as new consoles tend to do, both have been selling out across most markets globally. Japan, however, has been a Nintendo-dominated region for a long time, and the new consoles don’t really seem to have changed that much.

As reported by Famitsu, the PS5 sold 118,085 units in Japan within four days of its release, which isn’t an awfully impressive number for a console launch, but might have something to do with shorter supply in the region. They’re also the lowest launch sales figures for any PlayStation system, handheld or console, in Japan, second only to the PS3, which sold under 90,000 units in the region at launch.

Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X/S have collectively sold 20,534 units within the first six days of their launch. This is the lowest launch sales total for an Xbox launch in Japan, falling short of the Xbox One’s roughly 24,000 units sold at launch. Famitsu haven’t provided figures for how much exactly the Xbox Series X and Series S sold separately.

Launch sales figures for a couple of PS5 launch titles have also been provided, and they’re not particularly impressive either. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls sold 18,640 copies and 18,607 copies respectively within four days of launch.

It bears mentioning once again that all the new consoles have been facing supply constraints and stock shortages in markets throughout the world, and it’s likely that neither Sony nor Microsoft sent a particularly large initial stock to Japan. It should be interesting to see how they fare in the coming weeks and months in terms of sales.
