Richard Lemarchand, co-lead designer of Naughty Dog had a lot to say in an excellent interview with Eurogamer, and he revealed a lot of information as to what keeps the stellar studio charged, and motivated to make quality games. He said that the Naughty Dog team pushes the boundaries because they usually bite off more than they can chew.
In other words, he says, you have to be really mad to create a game like Uncharted 3.
“Well, we are mad. My co-lead game designer Jacob Minkoff famously and repeatedly says we are only able to make these games because we are quite, quite mad, and we unrelentingly bite off nearly more than we can chew each time,” he revealed.
Having a high ambition and being motivated to constantly innovate is one of the main reasons why these studios are so successful. You can see it with Gears of War 3, where Epic completely outdone itself, or any successful game which wouldn’t have been possible without aiming high.
“But that’s how you get to great, high quality games. You have to dream big in order to make things like Uncharted 3,” he added.
Uncharted 3 will release on November 1st and then we’ll come to know how far Naughty Dog went with the game. So far, seeing this amazing single player footage that was leaked from the Eurogamer Expo, we have to say that they really are mad.
