Baldur Gate 3 Will Make “Significant” Story Changes Before 1.0 Launch Even in the First Area

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke says that in addition to gameplay additions and improvements, narrative changes are being worked on as well.

Baldur's Gate 3 (3)

Baldur’s Gate 3 entered early access late last year, offering a pretty meaty chunk of the game. The entire first area is available in the early access version, which includes the story’s introduction and quite a few side quests, all of which can amount to a total of 20-30 hours of gameplay. As with any early access launch though, the game is still very much a work in progress. Changes, additions, and improvements are still incoming- and not just for the gameplay side of things. Narrative changes are also being worked on, even in the part of the game that’s currently available in early access.

Speaking to Destructoid, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke said that significant parts of the story that hadn’t been included in early access because they weren’t ready at the time are going to be inserted into the full game. He also suggested that in cases players have been interpreting things based on the story content available in the game’s early access version, and Larian intended for those things to be interpreted differently, changes may be made accordingly.

“It’s interesting to see what people write about them and make their opinion, opinion, especially if you know stuff that comes later” he said. “So it’s really, it’s cool to see. But it also tells you, yeah, okay, well, they’re completely seeing this person like that, and that’s actually not what we meant from the get-go, we wanted them to seem like that.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is in early access on PC and Stadia. A release date for the full game hasn’t yet been announced, but Vincke has said the RPG still needs a lot of work before the game exits early access, so it’s probably still going to be a while.
