God of War: Ragnarok Will “Cap off” the Series’ Norse Saga

The upcoming sequel will be the conclusion to the Norse saga of God of War, suggesting that the series could move on to new mythologies next.

With God of War (2018), SIE Santa Monica Studio’s long-running series left behind the Greek mythology setting that it had started out with and stuck for so long and entered the Norse realm instead, and most were expecting that this new era would last for quite a while. The general expectation was that this new story would be a trilogy, but it seems Santa Monica Studio is ready to wrap it all up in just two games.

During the post-show interviews following yesterday’s PlayStation Showcase, it was confirmed that God of War: Ragnarok would be the last game in the series’ Norse saga, first by PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, and then by Eric Williams, who’s replaced Cory Barlog as director on the game.

When asked about what role Ragnarok itself will play in the story, Williams said: “You can’t call the game God of War: Ragnarok and not have Ragnarok happen in the game. It’s gonna happen. We’re gonna cap off the Norse series with it.”

There are, of course, plenty of mythological settings still that God of War can head to. In fact, God of War (2018) itself had possible hints for more of them, including, for instance, Egyptian mythology. Of course, how Santa Monica Studio chooses to end God of War: Ragnarok while also leaving the door open for more sagas remains to be seen.

God of War: Ragnarok will launch some time in 2022 for PS5 and PS4. It’s been confirmed that Bear McCreary will be returning as the game’s composer.
