In a recent interview with Japanese publication Anan, Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima talked about how he wants to create games that change based on conditions in real-life. During the interview, Kojima said that he wants to make games that change based on a person’s location, time, weather etc.

Kojima has previously worked on a GBA game called Boktai: The Sun Is In Your Hand, which featured a light sensor and a clock. Both of these sensors were present on the cartridge, and the game’s vampires would be defeated using the light from the real world. Kojima wants to make games that take these ideas forward in new and interesting ways.

“What I want to do is to make games that change in real time,” he said (as translated by VGC). “People of all ages and professions are playing the same game, but everyone is playing the same way. Instead, it’s something that changes depending on where you live and how you feel about it.

“I made a game called Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand before. It’s a portable Game Boy Advance with a sun sensor and a clock. The amount of light from the sun is reflected in the game to defeat vampires, so the game changes depending on where and when you play. This kind of device connects the system created by people to the real world.”

Kojima is known for creating experiences that veer away from tropes, with titles like Death Stranding being loved by many (and also not so much by others). Kojima has expressed a lot of desires for creating a litany of different experiences, but what Kojima Productions is currently working remains mostly a mystery.
