Sony to Keep Producing PS4s Amidst Widespread PS5 Shortages – Report

A recent Bloomberg report outlines how Sony is continuing to produce PS4s to combat the ongoing chip shortages.

A recent report from Bloomberg has revealed how Sony has reportedly told multiple console assembly partners to continue making more PS4s, especially given how the system is relatively easier to produce as it avoids falling prey (at least to the same extent) to the supply-chain constraints that have significantly affected the production of Sony and Microsoft’s current-gen consoles .

While Sony never outright mentioned when it would stop making the PS4, partners were apparently told that the company would discontinue assembly for the consoles after 2021 (although a Sony spokesperson says that no such plans were ever made). Either way, Sony is set to produce 1 million PS4 units this year, and the strategy should help in taking pressure off the company’s PS5 production and help in striking more lucrative deals with manufacturers for the future.

The PS4 has an impressive install base of 116 million and counting, and as such, many of the biggest first-party Sony games have decided to stick to cross-gen releases, such as the likes of God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7.

The PS4 continues to sell particularly well in select growing markets such as India, where last-gen hardware continues to have high demand usually- and also because getting a PS5 has been especially difficult thanks to scarce restocks.
