Gran Turismo 7's steep monetization and controversial changes to progression have resulted in widespread backlash from players.

Gran Turismo 7

Gran Turismo 7 enjoyed a successful launch, with universal praise from critics and impressive sales upon release, but within a couple of weeks, things have quickly turned sour for the game. Having already been on the receiving end of criticism from players for its aggressive in-game monetization (for a game that already costs $70 on the PS5), Gran Turismo 7 recently came under even more fire when Polyphony Digital lowered in-game currency payouts from races, making the progression even grindier and pushing players to spend real money.

Unsurprisingly, that hasn’t been met well by the game’s playerbase. As reported by VGCGran Turismo 7’s PS5 version has recently seen an overwhelming flurry of negative user reviews on Metacritic, with the vast majority of these arriving after the aforementioned changes were made to event payouts. Currently, the game stands at an average user score of 2.2. Incredibly, that’s the lowest ever Metacritic score for any Sony-published game to date.

Recently, Polyphony Digital boss and Gran Turismo producer and director Kazunori Yamauchi said that the studio would continue to tweak the game to address concerns related to microtransactions- read more on that through here.

Gran Turismo 7’s servers were also recently offline for well over 24 hours, making the vast majority of the game unplayable for the duration, thanks to its always-online requirements even for single player content.
