Call of Duty: Zombies – Standalone Title Rumours Resurface as Treyarch Expands Recruitment

Rumours of a standalone Call of Duty: Zombies game have been about for over a year, and Treyarch seems to be recruiting for a project that sounds very much like that.

Activision has a lot of major upcoming Call of Duty games in development right now, from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2 to a dedicated mobile version of the battle royale title– but as you’d expect, there are other projects in the works that haven’t yet been officially acknowledged.

One of these has potentially been in the rumour mill for over a year- more than a few times, we’ve heard reports of a standalone Call of Duty: Zombies game being in development, and recent developments seem to lend some credence to that. Treyarch, the studio that pioneered the mode, is expanding its team and looking to recruit in a number of positions, and it seems, a bulk of that recruitment drive is focused on something to do with Zombies.

While retweeting Treyarch’s recent recruitment call, Kevin Drew – associate design director at the studio and in charge of all things Zombies – seemed to strongly suggest that the rumoured Zombies project could be real.

“We have big plans for Zombies and want to grow the team to realize them,” Drew wrote. “There are several design positions open at a range of experience levels so it’s a great time to apply if you are interested!”

Earlier this year, reports claimed that Call of Duty would be breaking its long-standing annual release cycle next year and skip its premium 2023 instalment. At the time, Activision said it was working on “an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year and beyond”. Whether or not a standalone Zombies project is part of that remains to be seen.
