The Callisto Protocol director Glen Schofield has revealed more details about the game’s weapon customisation system. Speaking to IGN at the Gamescom show floor, Schofield talks about how the weapons system affects the game’s combat.

The Callisto Protocol‘s setting will feature 3D printers all over the place that act as work benches where players can upgrade their weapons. According to Schofield, each weapon in the game will have its own upgrade tree that players can work towards.

“You can kind of customise your weapon the way you want to play,” says Schofield. “But you’re not going to be able to get the whole upgrade tree in one game.”

That’s where The Callisto Protocol‘s replayability will sit according to Schofield. Weapons will also be balanced quite evenly between melee and ranged options, allowing players more options in their combat preferences.

The Callisto Protocol‘s weapon upgrade trees will feature enhancement options that have weapons evolve over time. Rather than just getting linear upgrades to damage, for example, weapons will instead change to become more specialised over time depending on the player’s choice of upgrades.

Schofield has also stated that, with the game being only a few months away from release, the studio is essentially working on ironing out all of the bugs from the game. This would imply that primary development on The Callisto Protocol has been completed.

The Callisto Protocol got a gameplay showcase trailer during Gamescom where the game was running on current-gen console hardware. It showed off a fair bit of combat as well, with protagonist Jacob killing Biophages with guns, a shock baton, and the GRP.

The Callisto Protocol is coming out on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 2.
