Sony has made a concerted effort to improve the PS5’s supply situation around the world in recent months, and true to its word, it seems like the company is planning to ramp that up even further in the next fiscal year, with what might very well be a record-breaking year.

That’s as per a report published by Tom Henderson on Insider-Gaming, where he claims that as per anonymous sources, Sony is aiming to ship (sell-in) a whopping 30 million units of the PS5 in fiscal year 2023, which runs from April 1, 2023 to March 30, 2024. That would far outstrip the most shipments even the PS4 or the Nintendo Switch have seen in a single fiscal year through their respective lifetimes.

In a recent report, Henderson stated that Sony was working on a new PS5 model with a detachable disc drive. He now writes that this new model is expected to drive the bulk of sales for the aforementioned period. The company expects to sell (sell-through) 30.5 million units of the console in the fiscal year, of which only 12 million units will account for the current PS5 models.

As per Henderson, production of the new model will begin in April 2023, with a launch currently planned for September. Allegedly, the current PS5 models will completely cease production by Holiday 2023, with Sony looking to cut down on production costs by having only one model on the market.

PS5 has shipped 21.7 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2022.
