It also revealed that while the PS5 outsold the PS4 in its first year, it undersold in its second year due to supply constraints.

Less than two years after the console’s launch and PlayStation 5 supply shortages continue to be an issue for many. Sony is aware of this and taking steps to address the same. In Sony Corporation’s Business Segment Briefings 2022, SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan discussed the company’s strategy in the Game and Network Services Segment.

Referring to PS5 supply issues as a “top priority”, it was revealed that while the PS5 outsold the PS4 in its first year, it lagged behind in the second due to supply shortage. It’s expected to close the gap in Year 3 and eventually overtake PS4 sales by Year 4. Short-term risks currently include the impact of COVID-19 for parts inventory in places like Shanghai and the impact of Russia for logistics and potential parts inventory.

Some mitigation measures that are currently in progress include sourcing multiple suppliers for “greater agility in unstable market conditions.” There are also “ongoing logistical negotiations” that will help maintain an “optimal PS5 delivery route.”

Supply shortages have affected other consoles as well, with Nintendo reportedly expecting Nintendo Switch sales to drop by 10 percent. Xbox boss Phil Spencer also believed last year that shortages could still be an issue in 2022, though the Xbox Series X/S is in a better state (like earlier this month when it outsold the PS5). Stay tuned for more updates on the situation in the coming months.
