God of War Ragnarok launched earlier in the month, and it’s fair to say that the game has lived up to the years of hype and anticipation that led up to its release. It’s been widely acclaimed by critics and leads the way in nominations at next month’s The Game Awards. Unsurprisingly, that success has been reflected in the game’s initial sales figures as well.
Sony has announced that God of War Ragnarok sold 5.1 million units in its debut week, which is a record launch for the God of War franchise, which sold 3.1 million units at launch in 2018. The newly-released action-adventure sequel has also enjoyed the biggest ever launch for a PlayStation first party releasing, outpacing The Last of Us Part 2’s 4 million units sold at launch.
God of War Ragnarok enjoyed a solid debut in Japan, while in the UK, its launch week sales beat the likes of Elden Ring and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
In our review of God of War Ragnarok, we awarded it a score of 10/10, saying, “God of War Ragnarok surpasses its predecessor in every way. From its captivating story to its thrilling combat to the endlessly explorable and wonderfully designed Nine Realms of Norse mythology, it’s an unequivocal triumph from top to bottom.” Read the full review through here.
God of War Ragnarok is available on PS5 and PS4. Game director Eric Williams has said that the game is unlikely to receive DLC, though developer SIE Santa Monica Studio is nonetheless currently working on multiple projects.
