Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader

Of all the Warhammer games released thus far, Owlcat Games’ Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader is unique in that it’s the first CRPG. As a Rogue Trader, you venture to the Koronus Expanse to discover treasure, rule over worlds, and much more. Of course, even with the near-infinite powers bestowed by the Emperor, there are checks and balances.

In a new post, the developer revealed a power that stands above the Rogue Traders – the Holy Orders of the Emperor’s Inquisition. Though their purpose is to destroy threats to the Emperium, they’re not too fond of the Rogue Traders since their “overconfidence and lack of restraint could lead to damnation and, consequently, to unimaginable ruin.”

As a result, a member of the Inquisition is placed on the Rogue Trader’s voidship “to watch and to assess to either respectfully usher the lost ship back into the fold or mercilessly cull the heretic if they are deemed hopeless.”

So, who’s the bundle of sunshine that will accompany you? Interrogator Heinrix van Calox, a Psyker and “living weapon of the Inquisition, an example of the vile power of the warp, bound and controlled by the vigorous training and unbending will of the man himself.”

While previously on a mission at the behest of a “high-standing and powerful” mentor, Heinrix eventually meets the Rogue Trader. While he’s furthering the Inquisition’s goals, he also has to deal with heretics, Xenos and other company that one may keep. “Still, there is something important about this particular Rogue Trader, something that urges the Inquisition to stay the hand of judgement and forces van Calox to endure more than his fair share of questionable decisions from the Lord Captain.”

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is in development for PC and consoles. A release date hasn’t been announced, but Founder’s Packs provide access to the upcoming PC beta. There’s also a physical Collector’s Edition available for pre-order at $299 – head here for more details.
