Film and TV adaptation of video games are gathering significant momentum, and more than a few major gaming properties have had adaptations greenlit of late, from Super Mario Bros., Gears of War, and Death Stranding to The Last of UsGod of War, and many more. The chances of commercial and critical success for each of these also seem higher than they ever have in the past- so does that mean more companies will look to expand their audiences with similar projects?

That much seems guaranteed at this point, and it looks like Dead Space is going to be another one of those. Legendary film director and horror connoisseur John Carpenter was recently asked about his long-standing interest in making a Dead Space film in an interview with Variety, and in the process of answering this question, he may have let slip that a film is indeed in the works- though it doesn’t seem like Carpenter is attached to the project.

“I can’t believe how that spread,” Carpenter said when asked about his potential involvement in a Dead Space film. “I’m a big video game fan, so I played all the games. I was down looking at the new digital cameras, the RED, and happened to mention to them that I would love to do a Dead Space film. That just went around, and everybody said, ‘Oh, when are you gonna do it?’ I’m not gonna do it. I think they already have another director involved. And they haven’t asked me to do it. So until someone asks me, I wouldn’t do it.”

Regardless of Carpenter’s involvement in a Dead Space movie, however, the director confirms that he’s looking forward to the upcoming remake and will definitely be playing it.

“There’s a new version of the Dead Space video game coming out in January, and I’m there,” he said.

The remake is, of course, the first step that EA is taking in its efforts to revive the franchise after a long hiatus, though there’s no telling yet what the company has planned for it beyond that. Whether those plans include a film adaptation remains to be seen, but there will be no shortage of series fans who’ll be quite excited about the prospect.

The Dead Space remake, meanwhile, is launching imminently, and will be available on January 27 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
