HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation will be premiering in a month’s time, but Sony has plenty more in the pipeline where adaptations of its gaming properties are concerned. A God of War TV series was confirmed to be in production earlier this year (alongside Horizon and Gran Turismo), and that has now been made fully officially.
As reported by Deadline, it’s been announced that Amazon Prime Video, Sony Pictures, and PlayStation Productions are co-producing God of War, which has now been officially given a series order. The series has been in production since March, and will serve as an adaptation of the 2018 title.
“When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish,” the series’ official description reads. “Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
Rafe Judkins, showrunner of Amazon Prime’s The Wheel of Time, will serve in the same capacity for God of War, while Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby – best known for The Expanse, Children of Men, and Iron Man – will be the show’s writers. Judkins, Fergus, Ostby, and SIE Santa Monica Studio’s creative director Cory Barlog – who, of course, directed the 2018 game – will also together serve as executive producers on the show.
Other executive producers include Playstation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee, while SIE Santa Monica Studio’s Jeff Ketcham will be co-executive producer.
“The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” says Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”
“We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series,” says Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios. “Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos.”
“God of War is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way,” says Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions.
Over on Twitter, Cory Barlog has said “it will be a while” before we hear or see more about the series.
God of War (2018), available for PS4 and PC, has sold 23 million units to date. God of War Ragnarok launched for PS5 and PS4 in November, and sold 5.1 million units in its debut week, becoming PlayStation Studios’ biggest launch to date.
