Sony has filed a patent whih seemingly has to do with the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Patentscope describes the patent as an NFT framework for transferring and using digital assets between game platforms.

Going by the patent’s description, it seems to revolve around allowing players earning NFTs by completing objectives in games, and then allowing players to use the NFTs across different games and even systems. The patent also allows the ability to transfer ownership of the NFTs.

While it is currently unknown what Sony-published or developed game will see NFTs in them, it is worth noting that companies often file quite a few patents without actually using any of them.

It is also worth noting that other gaming companies have been slowly pulling out of the NFT space, with Ubisoft seeing quite a bit of backlash when it tried to introduce NFTs as a concept in Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

More recently, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda—a proponent of using NFTs in games—was announced to be stepping down from his position in June. In the mean time, Square Enix is working on releasing an NFT project dubbed Symbiogenesis.
