The Division 2 is “Unlikely” to Get Native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions

According to creative director Yannick Banchereau, if The Division 2 were to take full advantage of current-gen hardware, it would have to stop supporting last-gen consoles.

Four years on from its launch, The Division 2 has continued to be supported by Massive Entertainment with new updates and seasonal content, and it seems like that’s set to continue. As recently announced, the game’s fifth year of post-launch content will be commencing in early June– if, however, you were hoping to see The Division 2 get native releases for current-gen console, that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.

That’s according to creative director Yannick Banchereau, who said in a recent interview with MP1st that The Division 2 is unlikely to get native versions on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, because if Massive Entertainment were indeed to take full advantage of the current-gen consoles’ hardware, it would have to stop supporting last-gen machines- which, given how much of the looter shooter’s playerbase is still on PS4 and Xbox One, is something the developer is unwilling to do.

“That’s unlikely because if we really wanted to take full advantage of those, since we only have one version of the game that is available on all platforms, taking full advantage of those would mean that the game would no longer be available on the old generations,” Banchereau said. “We still have a lot of players that play on all generations and we are not ready to leave them behind and ask them to upgrade. Right now we are trying to make sure every time we add something, it still runs smoothly on the old gen as well.”

Of course, though The Division 2 doesn’t have native versions available on current-gen consoles, it did get an update a couple of years ago that allowed it to support 4K and 60 FPS gameplay on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Developer Massive Entertainment has plenty else on its plate as well, with two new major projects currently in the works in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and an open world Star Wars game.
