Sony has announced that the PS5 has now sold over 40 million units worldwide. As of March 31, the console stood at 38.4 million units shipped.

After launching worldwide in November of 2020, the console faced significant supply global supply short ages for a sustained period of time, brought on by the COVID-19, though supply chains have become normalized in recent months. The console has managed to hit the 40 million milestone just two months slower than the PS4 did, which remains the fastest-selling PlayStation console to that number to date.

“We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019,” PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan wrote. “Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time. We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand. For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues. But now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent up demand finally being met.

“With the support of PlayStation fans, we have reached a milestone of 40 million PS5 consoles sold through to gamers since launch. Thank you so much to our community of gamers – without you this would have been an impossible task.”

Sony also confirms that the PS5’s library currently boasts over 2,500 games, a little under three years on from the console’s launch. Sony’s next major release for the PS5 is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 this October, which will be preceded by a limited edition PS5 bundle as well.

Meanwhile, leaks have claimed that Sony has a new PS5 model with a detachable disc drive set to release this September. The new console SKU, which might allegedly be revealed next month, will replace the PS5’s current existing models, reports have claimed.

It’s also been claimed that a PS5 Pro is in the works. Allegedly targeting a late 2024 launch, the console is feature support for 8K resolution output, performance improvements at 4K, accelerated ray tracing, and more.
