After expecting “record-breaking sales” this holiday season, Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold over 50 million units in its lifetime. According to The Financial Times, the company reported reaching that figure on December 9th, about 161 weeks after the console launched (the PS4 took 160 weeks).

On top of this, Sony also reported its best Black Friday sales period for the console yet and expects to hit 25 million units sold for this fiscal year. Eric Lempel, senior vice president for global marketing, sales and business operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said (via Reuters), “Given the momentum we’ve had in November and a lot of what we’re seeing in December, just in general we’re feeling very good about sales overall.”

Supply constraints affected the console heavily in its early years, which have reduced over time. To see it reach such figures despite that is a testament to the console’s demand. Of course, titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 doubtless helped it hit the new milestone, selling over 2.5 million in 24 hours and over six million copies as of November 12th (per the recently leaked documents from Insomniac Games).

2024 looks even better, with titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launching on February 29th and Rise of the Ronin on March 22nd. Stay tuned for more updates on future titles in the coming months.
