Dragon’s Dogma 2 Has “a Good Bit” of Completely Optional Content That Many Players Won’t Find

"We made a lot that players don't necessarily need to find, but will be incredibly moved if they do find it," says director Hideaki Itsuno.

The original Dragon’s Dogma was a massive open world experience, and with Capcom promising that its upcoming sequel is going to be even bigger, expectations are certainly high in terms of how much content the game will have on offer, and what sort of quality we can expect from its side content.

On that note, Capcom recently revealed the Sphinx via a video published by IGN, describing it as an entirely optional and mysterious enemy that players will be seek out, and in the same video, also touched briefly on what else Dragon’s Dogma 2’s optional content will entail.

According to lead game designer Kento Kinoshita, though the game will have structured design and pacing when you’re sticking to its main story, it’s also going to have plenty of optional content across its massive open world map.

“The map is just so big, and while there is level design, with places we want players to go in a certain order, there are still characters placed all the way off in a corner,” Kinoshita said. “I think it’s something so unique to open world games.”

Kinoshita and director Hideaki Itsuno went on to jokingly talk about the “extravagant waste” of how much completely optional content Dragon’s Dogma 2 is going to have tucked away, with the former adding that there will be “a good bit” of side content that players won’t find unless they go out looking for it.

“We made a lot that players don’t necessarily need to find, but will be incredibly moved if they do find it,” Itsuno said. “If there are parts of the game that you don’t have to discover, you can beat it without finding them. It’s just so…”

“It’s such an extravagant waste,” Kinoshita offered with a laugh.

“It is,” Itsuno said, “but it’s something we’ve done quite a lot of this time.”

“There is a good bit that you won’t be able to get unless you head out there yourself to get it,” Kinoshita added.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 will launch on March 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Check out recently revealed gameplay footage for its Fighter, Thief, Warrior, Sorcerer, and Trickster Vocations.
