From its hand-to-hand combat and its fully simulated whip to its focus on cinematic set pieces and the fact that it’s going to be a primarily first-person experience, there’s plenty about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle that has been revealed by developer MachineGames, though some questions have still yet to be answered. For instance, how is the game going to be structured? Is it going to be a linear experience, as you’d expect from a cinematic action-adventure game such as this one, or will it afford room for open-ended exploration?

As it turns out, it’s going to do a little bit of both. As per an official overview of the game on its Steam page, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will tout a mix of linear, cinematic gameplay and wide, open maps for players to freely explore. And yes, there’s going to be snakes as well. It always has to be snakes.

“Venture through a dynamic mix of linear, narrative-drive gameplay and open-area maps,” the overview reads. “Indulge your inner explorer and unearth a world of fascinating secrets, deadly traps, and fiendish puzzles, where anything could potentially hide the next piece of the mystery- and snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?”

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s Developer_Direct presentation also offered a glimpse of the many locations the archaeologist will be visiting throughout his journey, from the Vatican City and the snowy peaks of the Himalayas to the pyramids of Egypt and the sunken temples of Sukhothai in Thailand, so there’s clearly going to be a variety of different environments that players will be able to explore. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of them in the months ahead.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launches later this year on Xbox Series X/S and PC. MachineGames has revealed that Troy Baker will play Indiana Jones in the game.
