Helldivers 2’s Overcrowded Servers Are Causing Login and Reward Issues

In a nutshell, Arrowhead Game Studios' co-op third-person shooter is suffering from unexpected success.

Helldivers 2 has turned out to be a bigger success than even Sony or developer Arrowhead Game Studios would have expected. The latter’s CEO, Johan Pilestedt, recently revealed that the game was “blowing through the estimates”, having sold around a million copies, surpassing 155,000 concurrent players on Steam to become Sony’s biggest launch on the platform, and garnering over 360,000 concurrent players across all platforms.

That unexpected success, as some may have guessed, is also causing players to run into connectivity and technical issues. Though Arrowhead recently released hotfixes for the game, issues related to servers, logging in, and rewards are still persisting, and as explained by Pilestedt in a recently published message on Twitter, that’s down to the unexpected level of crowding that the game’s servers are having to handle.

Specifically where issues causing players to fail login attempts are concerned, Pilestedt says it’s because the game’s servers have exceeded “the maximum number of login requests for that particular minute and/or that the servers are full and will require someone to log out before allowing new players logging in.” However, Pilested says that Arrowhead has increased server capacity, which should help ease up the issue a little bit.

Additionally, technical issues where sometimes the game doesn’t properly hand out rewards to players are also expected to persist for now. “The fix was mitigated, but not resolved,” Pilestedt wrote. “And without additional server maintenance, this will still not work as intended. If you get the issue, you can try rebooting the game to increase the chance of it being reset. This is due to the high traffic on the servers leading to rewards not being tracked correctly by our servers.”

So what’s the next step? Well, first and foremost, the development team needs to, you know, sleep- but Pilested says they’ll be back at it “in a few hours.”

“I know the progression issue is frustrating, especially for newer divers that want to unlock sweet gear,” he wrote. “For now, please once again accept our sincere apologies for the issues you’re facing, and rest assured, we’re doing our utmost to make it right. In order to do so, right now it is crucial that our team gets some sleep, and we will be back at this again in a few hours.”

Beyond updates and regular maintenance, Helldivers 2 has plenty more in store where its post-launch support is concerned, including free additions in the form of new biomes, objectives, enemies, story updates, and more.

Helldivers 2 is available on PS5 and PC. Our review will be going live soon, so stay tuned.
