Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

The review embargo for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth lifted yesterday, which means impressions on Square Enix’s massively anticipated action RPG have gone live from a large number of critics, influencers, and outlets- and the consensus is glowing, to the point where it’s turned out to be one of the best-reviewed Final Fantasy games of all time.

At the time of writing, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is sitting at a Metacritic score of 93, which makes it the second-highest rated Final Fantasy game to date. It trails behind Final Fantasy 9, which sits at a score of 94, but where Rebirth has 119 reviews on Metacritic, Final Fantasy 9 has only 22, which some might argue makes the former’s score more of an impressive accomplishment.

The original PS1 version of Final Fantasy 7, meanwhile, has a Metacritic score of 90 after 24 reviews, while Rebirth’s direct predecessor, 2020’s Final Fantast 7 Remake, sits at an aggregate score of 87 (or 89 for PS5’s Intergrade re-release).

Rebirth also sits above Final Fantasy 12, Final Fantasy 6’s Game Boy Advance version, and Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker, all of which have a score of 92 on the website, while Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers sits at a score of 90.

In our own review of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, we awarded it a score of 10/10, saying, “The promise of those old, grand, globe-trotting Final Fantasy epics from the series’ 16- and 32-bit heyday in AAA form has been fulfilled at last. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth finally realizes the series’ central, implicit potential, looking to the past to pave the way for hopefully the start of a new golden age for the series.” Read the full review through here.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches on February 29 exclusively for PS5.
