The recently released Astro Bot is overflowing with love and adoration for PlayStation, with 150 VIP bots taking the form of a variety of characters from first- and third-party franchises from across PlayStation’s history- and that is by no means the extent of it. Of course, one would imagine that even with all of the references, nods, and easter eggs developer Team Asobi has been able to stuff into the platformer, there will have been many more that would not have made it through several stages of development- a couple of whom seem to have emerged.

VGC recently uploaded a behind-the-scenes making-of video on Astro Bot, in which it showcases new concept art featuring the Twisted Metal franchise’s Sweet Tooth and the Fat Princess franchise’s eponymous protagonist, both of whom don’t appear in the final game. Several other characters who do appear in the game can also be seen in the concept art. You can view it and the video below.

Of course, Team Asobi has confirmed that it’s working on free DLC for the platformer, so there is perhaps a chance that we get to see some additional PlayStation cameos down the line that didn’t feature in the base experience. Or maybe Team Asobi has already started saving up ideas for future projects- or so one would hope, at least.

Astro Bot has received widespread acclaimed, becoming the best reviewed game of 2024, while it also seems to be enjoying strong initial sales, having sold out on Amazon Japan

In our own review of the game, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, “Astro Bot is a wonderful love letter to all things PlayStation, and an exceptional platformer in its own right. If you own a PS5, you need to play this game.” Read the full review through here.
