However, Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda believes an announcement this year will be "quite difficult" given the holiday shopping season.

Hardware sales for the Nintendo Switch recently crossed 146 million units, which is impressive considering the console’s debut in 2017. While sales are dropping overall, the company plans to reveal the console’s successor in the current fiscal year (i.e. by March 31st, 2025).

According to a recent online press conference (as reported by Reuters), Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa reiterated this plan. However, he didn’t provide further details, like a specific month. A reveal was rumored for September (which didn’t happen), but insiders like PH Brazil report that it’s still set for sometime this year.

Unfortunately, that may also be unlikely. Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda told the site, “Making an announcement this year has gotten quite difficult… You would not want to divert attention to an upcoming console in the middle of the critical year-end shopping season.” It makes sense since the Nintendo Switch is still moving units and receiving new high-profile titles, from The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom this past September to the upcoming Mario and Luigi: Brothership.

The Nintendo Switch’s successor allegedly has two SKUs, one retailing for $449 while the other, a digital-only model, will cost $399. Thus far, we’ve seen rumblings of potential titles for the platform, from Pokemon Legends: Z-A to Yooka-Replaylee, on top of unannounced titles like the rumored Sonic Heroes Remake and Persona 6. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming months.
