Square Enix is “Satisfied” with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Sales, but Feels Exclusives Are No Longer Tenable

"Although we're satisfied that we're reaching a certain level of sales, it's clear that we can't be exclusive to a single platform," says producer Yoshinori Kitase.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be remembered as not only one of 2024’s best games, but also as one of the best Final Fantasy games ever, period- and yet, much to the disappointment of Square Enix, the action RPG has failed to match its critical acclaim with commercial success. Square Enix has previously said that Rebirth sold below the company’s expectations, and that, combined with the underperformance of Final Fantasy 16, has prompted to multiple proclamations by the publisher that going forward, its titles are no longer going to be exclusive to any one platform.

Speaking with IGN BrazilFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase reiterated the same. According to Kitase, though Square Enix is “satisfied” with the remake’s sales, the company has also arrived at the conclusion that its games can no longer be exclusive to any one platform if they are to be as profitable as it needs them to be.

“Although we’re confident and satisfied that we’re reaching a certain level of sales, it’s clear that, with the modernity of games, we can’t be exclusive to a single platform,” he said. “I think we need to offer the game to as many players as possible.”

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is, of course, set to launch for PC on January 23, with Final Fantasy 16 already having released for the platform in September. How long it’ll be before both titles (and Final Fantasy 7 Remake) finally make their way over to Xbox is, of course, the big question now, though presumably, the next big Final Fantasy game isn’t going to be a PlayStation exclusive.
