A major reason for the positive critical reception of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has been the fact that it uses much of the same voice acting as the original. However, in an interview with Inverse, David Hayter – voice actor of Naked Snake – spoke about being a bit disappointed that he didn’t get to re-do many of the voice lines from the original.
When asked about this, Hayter spoke about having improved as an actor in the twenty years since the original’s release, and how he would have liked to bring in some of that experience and expertise in the field when he reprised the role for the remake.
“I do feel that I’m a little better of an actor now than I was then,” he said. “It was fine back in the day, but I would have loved to bring some of the knowledge that I’ve picked up over the past 20 years to it. But you don’t want the controller lines to be better acted all of a sudden, because that’ll take you out of the game.”
Like many fans of the franchise, Hayter also looks at his role as Snake as some of the most definitive work he has done, and to that end, he also spoke about how he would love to be a part of any future Metal Gear projects.
“Anytime they ask me to be Snake, I’m in,” Hayter said. “It’s the definitive role in my life. It’s so complex and so profound, and there are so many different aspects to both him and Big Boss. So anytime it comes up, I’m down.”
Hayter had previously spoken about continuing the Metal Gear franchise after the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, noting that while it may not be the same as the series used to be under Hideo Kojima, it would still have the potential to be amazing.
“Will it be the same? No,” said Hayter earlier this month. “There’s no way to replicate [Kojima’s] exact genius, his exact weirdness, his specific personality. When I was a kid, I loved Tim Burton’s Batman, and was like, ‘That’s how Batman should be done.’ And then Chris Nolan does Batman, and you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s pretty badass as well.’ So will it be the same? No. Could it be amazing? Sure.”
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a complete ground-up remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The title features several enhancements over the original, including the option to play with modern control schemes and brand new visuals courtesy of Unreal Engine 5.
