Known industry leaker NateTheHate believes that Sony has a State of Play presentation planned for next week. While no further details about this State of Play have been revealed so far, including a date or time, the event is expected to be a precursor to the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2025. The event is also expected to give us our first look at Insomniac Games’ long-in-development project Marvel’s Wolverine.
This upcoming State of Play will serve as a follow-up to the last one we got back in June, which proved to be an incredibly successful event for Sony. The livestream for June’s State of Play had gotten more than 2.2 million live viewers, marking a new record for the company’s showcases. At its peak, the State of Play got 2.2 million concurrent viewers, which averaged out to around 1.9 million viewers over the course of a stream.
Sony also recently held a game-specific State of Play earlier this month, focusing on IO Interactive’s upcoming James Bond title 007: First Light. During the event, quite a few details about the game were revealed, including stealth and action gameplay, Q gadgets, melee combat, and more.
As for Marvel’s Wolverine, considering how long it has been in development and the nature of Insomniac Games, it is expected to essentially be the headlining trailer at the State of Play. The game’s presence during the event was indicated thanks to a report from earlier this month.
“I heard that there was going to be or there is going to be a State of Play towards the end of the month, and then, separately, from a person who I’ve known for years and has given me the most reliable information you can get, he then said that the Wolverine trailer is done,” said Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson in a podcast earlier this month. “You put two and two together, it suggests that Marvel’s Wolverine trailer is done because it’s going to be at the State of Play in September. It might not be. And if it isn’t, then possibly The Game Awards. We all know that Geoff Keighley likes his big reveals. Or who knows, maybe there’s another event.”
Another report from this month has indicated that Marvel’s Wolverine has come quite far in its development, to and that playtesters have been quite impressed by how it looks nad plays.
“So, it is done. It obviously was delayed to quite a big extent,” said Henderson in the same podcast. “From what I’ve managed to hear, from people working on the project, obviously, the ransomware attack and all the game leaking is one thing, but then the emotional strain that it places on people when you have all of your information leaked, like your address, social security numbers, and all that kind of stuff, is massive.”
“So that obviously delayed the game as well. But from a few playtesters I’ve been speaking to, they think the game looks fantastic. So that’s good news, and fingers crossed we get to see a release date in a couple of weeks’ time.”
