Battlefield: RedSec Lead Producer Promises More, Non-RPG Ways to Fight Vehicles

While being cryptic in a social media post, David Sirland assured players that the battle royale mode won't have overpowered vehicles.

As EA gets closer to the launch of free-to-play battle royale mode Battlefield: RedSec later today, lead producer David Sirland has taken to social media to allay fears that players might have about the strength of vehicles in the mode. When asked by a fan whether it will be “ruined by vehicles” if you can’t find an appropriate countermeasure like an RPG, Sirland said that there are also other ways to take on vehicles.

“There are ways to handle it outside of that,” wrote Sirland in a cryptic social media post. “But you’ll see.” While Sirland didn’t really reveal any more details about what these “ways” might be, the clear implication is that vehicles will likely not be as strong in Battlefield: RedSec as they are in the core multiplayer game modes of Battlefield 6.

Interestingly, the strength of vehicles was one of the main subjects that Battlefield Studios had touched on in its plans for Season 1 of Battlefield 6, which also provided an update to the state of the battle royale mode. Referring to the testing it had conducted for the battle royale mode with Battlefield Labs, the developers said that helicopters and combat vehicles have been adjusted for balance to ensure that they don’t end up being mandatory requirements for winning, while still making sure that they were powerful.

“We’ve adjusted the balance for helicopters and combat vehicles to keep them as powerful tools showing off Battlefield’s core DNA, without making them necessary to survive or win the late game,” wrote the company. “This includes significant adjustments to the helicopter countermeasures and ammo economy.”

It is worth noting that Battlefield Studios hadn’t officially confirmed a release date for the battle royale mode at the time. Rather, that happened earlier this week after a short-lived rumour leaked the fact that it will be called Battlefield: RedSec just a couple of hours before. The title, short for Redacted Sector, was announced to be coming out at around the same time as the first season of Battlefield 6 will kick off.

Battlefield: RedSec will have players join a special map made especially for the mode that will pit 25 squads of four players against each other. One of the biggest features that will set Battlefield: RedSec apart from its contemporaries will be the presence of combat vehicles. While there are vehicles in games like PUBG, they tend to be available purely as a mode of transport, and don’t tend to offer much in the way of offensive capabilities.

While Battlefield: RedSec also serves as something of a successor to Battlefield 5’s Firestorm, it also features its own takes on genre staples, like a deadlier encroaching ring than what we typically see.  The constantly enclosing ring instantly kills players rather than simply doing damage to them over time. This means that players aren’t able to weave in and out of the rings during prolonged engagements against other players.

While EA and Battlefield Studios haven’t confirmed the platforms for Battlefield: RedSec, it will likely come to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
