Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake

While a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is currently being developed by Mad Head Games under Saber Interactive, the original iteration of the remake, being developed by Aspyr, has had some of its details slowly leak out over time. As caught by Mp1st, the latest of these details is a cinematic that was quite early in production, with essentially no textures on the characters or the environment. The cinematic features Captain Carth Onasi and Trask Ulgo, both of whom are met early in the game as part of the Endar Spire ship in the tutorial for the game.

The barely animated cinematic even includes stage directions, like the player and Carth finding “themselves in the aftermath of a battle,” for instance. The cinematic also features some early voice work, and even reveals that the player’s character – historically unvoiced – would have also featured full voice acting.

Previous leaks also featuring screenshots from the early parts of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic indicate that the studio didn’t get too far into developing the full RPG before the project was eventually cancelled. In September 2025, we also got to look at how Aspyr’s remake would have handled planet Kashyyyk.

In the meantime, Saber Interactive’s chief creative officer, Tim Willits, has said that its remake of the seminal RPG is still under development. Unfortunately, however, he was unable to provide any more details about how it has been going. “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say,” he said in March.

The company has been quite silent since reports came out that it was taking over the development of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake from Aspyr back in 2022. Studio CEO Matthew Karch provided proper confirmation on the matter, saying that it is “alive and well”.

“It’s clear and it’s obvious that we’re working on this,” he said in 2024. “It’s been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.”

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was first released all the way back in 2003 on PC and Xbox, and is considered by many to be one of BioWare’s greatest games. Its story revolves around a regular Republic soldier who ends up caught in the middle of a massive war between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, the latter led by Darth Malak. Through a series of events, the protagonist awakens to the powers of the Force and sets off on a quest to become a knight in their own right, and depending on their choices, could end up with the Light side or the Dark side.

The title was praised for its epic story that made full use of the world-building that had already been established for the Star Wars setting, and is also well-remembered for its plot twist, which was one of the biggest ones in gaming at the time. In the meantime, Arcanaut Studios is also working on its own spiritual successor to the RPG, dubbed Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
