Sony on PS Vita’s sales: “We think we had a very good start”

The PS Vita launched in Japan five weeks ago, and sales have been getting progressively worse for the system, selling as low as 18,000 units last week and below 15K the week before that. Sony, however, is happy with the way the system has been performing and considers there won’t be any problem when it launches in the west later this month.

When asked by an analyst if he thought the Vita had been struggling in terms of sales, Sony executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato told investors: “Now the company has not publicly announced the shipping unit – unit of shipping and sales, at the appropriate time, we would do so.”

He continued: “But as far as the sell-through, three weeks have passed and sell-through is 500,000. This was announced on the 10th of January. So as a start, I think we had a very – a good start.

“Including software and hardware, we are carrying out the sales promotions and we do it to boost the sales, and we do not think we have any problems.”

In it’s first week, the Vita sold 324,859 units, which was pretty impressive. Then, in the next week, it sold 72,479, then 42,648, then 42,915, then 18,361,  then 15,219 and 18,942 last week, as linked above.

The PS Vita releases in the European and American markets later this month, in about 20 days. Stay tuned for more coverage.
