With Marvel’s Wolverine having finally come out on PS5, discussions that used to revolve around the title’s divisive critical reception have now spread out to players who have spent some time with the game. This has also led to the quality of the game’s voice acting, especially for the protagonist – played by Liam McIntyre – being called into question. Taking to social media, McIntyre himself has said that he is quite proud of his performance in the game, and that he is no stranger to being criticized.

Noting that his career got its true start when he took over the role of Spartacus: Blood and Sand’s namesake character, Spartacus, from Andy Whitfield, McIntyre brought up the point that he has experience in portraying beloved characters and facing criticisms for how he portrays them.

“Ha. Man, my career started with the responsibility of taking over for the incredible Andy Whitfield in Spartacus (RIP to that legend). I’ve read things you couldn’t believe 🙂 I just hope everyone has fun. I’m proud as hell of this game. It’s a blast,” he wrote on social media.

In another post, he expressed gratitude towards developer Insomniac Games along with Marvel Games for entrusting him to play the role of Logan in Marvel’s Wolverine, and reiterated that he is proud of what he was able to achieve with the character.

“I don’t know what the fates have in store for us tomorrow, but I just want to say thank you to everyone for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Thank you to Marvel Games and Insomniac Games for trusting me with such a beloved character. I’m so proud. What a journey.”

Voice acting isn’t the only department where Marvel’s Wolverine has attracted its fair share of discourse, however. Prior to the game’s release, many critics pointed out that Marvel’s Wolverine has the tendency to hold the player’s hand through its linear levels too often, and some even spoke about the scent trails that players can follow to their objectives. When Washington Post’s Gene Park spoke about how it wasn’t possible to disable these scent trails through the game’s accessibility settings, Insomniac Games’ community and marketing director James Stevenson took to social media to note that the trail wasn’t active all the time.

“The scent trail isn’t always on. It represents Logan’s canon mutant super senses and elite tracking ability,” he explained. “It only is there when he’s tracking a specific scent/sound (a person, whisky, or another clue scent) – story/mission moments or when he catches a whiff of a collectible.”

In the meantime, Insomniac Games has acknowledged the criticisms it has faced for Marvel’s Wolverine, and has said that it is “actively” gathering feedback that can be used to “further refine” the game.

“We’re also actively engaged with our player community and gathering feedback to further refine the player experience. We deeply appreciate our players’ passion, support, and time spent with Logan. We’re raising our claws in tribute, and can’t wait to hear about your own adventures playing Marvel’s Wolverine.”
