Remember Tenjutsu, a 2D pixel brawler helmed by former Dead Cells director Sébastien Benard? After seemingly falling off the face of the Earth for all these years, it’s received a new trailer and a 2027 release window. If that wasn’t enough, Nintendo Switch 2 players can get their hands on it alongside PC.
The latest gameplay trailer showcases what made Tenjutsu stand out in the first place: Protagonist Ten, a former Yakuza recently released from prison, taking fools to school with brutal hand-to-hand (and oftentimes, head-to-face) knockouts. Though seeking to leave her criminal past behind, Kuroboro City’s bosses have other ideas.
As you explore the city, each run randomised, you’ll pick up new skills to unleash on foes. New weapons also await, and depending on how you utilize the progression system (which relies on collecting tattooed teeth), you can unlock other benefits. Healing, vending machines with items, shop offerings – the works.
Stay tuned for more details in the coming months and a concrete release date (hopefully). As for Motion Twin, the studio that developed Dead Cells, it recently released Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, a new title in Konami’s long-running Metroidvania series. It’s also working on Windblown, an isometric rogue-lite hack-and-slash that’s currently in early access.
