The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Expansion Pricing Was About Providing “Quality at a Good Value”

CD Projekt RED's Marcin Momot says the developer always "wanted to create something that represented a real value for money."

The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine

CD Projekt RED has already made a significant return to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with its free Remastered update. However, Songs of the Past is a much bigger deal because it marks the first expansion for the open-world RPG since 2016’s Blood and Wine. While the developer hasn’t announced pricing, you can probably look back at its Expansion Pass, which over-delivered on value.

In fact, that’s what MP1st did with global community and social media director Marcin Momot. When asked what motivated this pricing, he said, “When we launched The Witcher 3, it was our first open-world game and our first real attempt at putting our storytelling philosophy to the test in such a wide and free setting. It was our most ambitious game at the time, by far, and I think the expansion pass was also part of that ambition.”

After the base game’s lofty bar, CD Projekt RED knew it had to over-deliver with its expansions, even with the affordable entry fee. “Most importantly though, it was all about the players. For those who supported us by buying the expansion pass for The Witcher 3, it really felt like they were putting their trust in us to expand the game in a meaningful way. I think it was a way to thank them for doing so and being there to take that journey with us.

“Above all, we wanted to provide quality at a good value. When we were finishing development on The Witcher 3 and thinking about expansions, we always said we wanted to create something that represented a real value for money. I think it’s safe to say we hit the mark,” said Momot.

It’s hard to disagree. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are considered some of the best expansions in gaming history. The former delivered an incredible narrative centered on Olgierd von Everec and the mysterious Gaunter O’Dimm. The latter introduced a new region, Tussant, and activities (while also sporting its own memorable story).

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past launches in 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It reached an astounding 900,000 wishlists after its Gamescom reveal. Though its release date remains unknown, CD Projekt RED confirmed it would focus on Dandelion and provide closure to his story with Geralt. Those who haven’t finished Blood and Wine should probably do so now – you may be treated to a few differences in the new expansion.
