id Software of DOOM fame may be nowhere near its former size and scale, but work certainly hasn’t stopped. From going “all in” on id Tech to reportedly working on a new Doom game, it’s also “working more closely” with MachineGames than ever before.
Studio co-director Marty Stratton revealed this during a recent press event (via IGN) for DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations. The initial question revolved around id Software’s status after the mass layoffs. “We’re doing great. Not to handwave the [layoffs] away…everybody knows we had about half of our studio exit as part of that. But there was a very deliberate effort to make sure that we were incredibly viable coming out of that across everything we do, across game development and the technology department.”
He then revealed, “We’re working more closely with MachineGames than ever. We’ve always had a very close partnership with them, but I think we’re at a point with technology development that both teams are incredibly talented and have incredibly talented engineers, and we’re really on an amazing path that had started pre-[layoffs]. We kicked this off earlier this year. We’re really excited about that. We’re both really, really bullish on what we have ahead.”
The obvious assumption is that id Software is helping out with the rumored Wolfenstein 3. Reports of casting calls emerged last February, with Windows Central further corroborating that it’s in development. A live-action show is also allegedly in the works with Amazon’s Fallout producers at the helm. Of course, there’s no information on when either will premiere, but an announcement in the coming year wouldn’t be too shocking.
The real question is whether they’re collaborating on the next Indiana Jones title, if it’s in development. More titles are allegedly in the works after the success of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but since the rumor first emerged in December 2024, there hasn’t been a peep.
Stay tuned for updates, and in the meantime, check out our review of DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations. Even in a packed year like this, it’s perhaps the best first-person shooter campaign out there.
