Almost two years after its announcement, progress on the long-awaited sequel to Okami remains a ways off. It’s not like director and Clovers founder Hideki Kamiya didn’t warn us. As such, the studio has been busy bringing on veterans of the original game, Bayonetta, and more, but even if expectations remain high, he’s urging a bit of restraint.
“[The Okami sequel] has become a sort of mission for me, because before, when I created a new game, I had no expectation from the public, of course,” he told IGN at the Lucca Comics and Games Festival 2026.
“It was something completely new and, in a sense, unexpected. Now that I’ve created sequels, the expectation from the public has grown quite a lot, and I feel that. It’s better if you don’t have many expectations.”
Far from telling fans to keep expectations low, Kamiya is acknowledging the inherent pressure. After all, Okami launched to rave reviews in 2006 but failed to achieve commercial success. Even its 2012 HD re-release on PS3, followed by PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PS4 in 2017, didn’t really make a dent.
Nevertheless, it remains one of the more beloved titles among its small but loyal following, and its gorgeous aesthetics still hold up to this day. Okami 2, or whatever it ends up being called, is developed on RE Engine and should retain that same art style. It also continues its predecessor’s story with protagonist Amaterasu returning, so long-time fans won’t miss a beat.
Stay tuned for more details and updates as the wait continues for a release date and gameplay (not to mention platforms). For what it’s worth, Capcom, which established Clovers, trusts the studio and is staying hands-off with development.
